I am getting closer to being able to focus on exploration. After my last post I also discovered salvaging and in fact decided I would go for that as well. In fact salvaging looks like the best way to begin Moriarity’s career.
Using the Certificate planner has been a good way to get started but following the advice of some of the people I have been talking to I think the time is quickly coming when I will need to plan my training more specifically. I am due to finish my basic artillery training in the next two days and after that I will get Moriarity to develop his field technician skills. Time to escape the boredom of mission running.
Having looked at the following page in Evelopedia: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/High_sec_exploration_(advanced) I got the following fitting:
[Wolf, Exploration] (27.5 million ISK)
Centii C-Type Small Armor Repairer (10million ISK)
Armor EM Hardener II (1.4 million ISK)
Armor Thermic Hardener II (1.5 million ISK)
Capacitor Power Relay II (849,000 ISK)
1MN Afterburner II (1 million ISK)
Cap Recharger II (525,000 ISK)
250mm Light Artillery Cannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S (460,000 ISK)
250mm Light Artillery Cannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S (460,000 ISK)
250mm Light Artillery Cannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S (460,000 ISK)
250mm Light Artillery Cannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S (460,000 ISK)
Small Capacitor Control Circuit I (340,000 ISK)
Small Capacitor Control Circuit I (340,000 ISK)
The cost of the ship plus fittings is a cool 45.294 million ISK for something that doesn’t even help me scan the blooming sites down! Elite gaming advice always sucks. The only place I could get help was after chatting to the guys in the ‘Free Wrecks’ channel – very handy.
So where to start? So I am going to have to try and put something together for someone of my lowly level of skills and income. Following advice from some of the pilots I had been talking to recently in the ‘Free Wrecks’ channel. See what a bit of scouting about can find you!
I did a search for Eve Fit. Except it wasn’t called eve fit it is called pyfa, the only way I knew that it might help was because of the picture of the Rifter beside the download link !! Ok so I downloaded it. Then discovered it needed some api key thing – and that it just would not get my character information. So fail on that front!
Anyway this is what I think is a more achievable beginner setup: I am going to begin with salvaging because it is less skill intensive and looks like some money can be made from it.
This will involve 2 Ships a) A scanning rig and b) a Salvaging Ship.

Cloaking 3,150,000 ISK
TOTAL = 12,370,000 ISK
OK these are far from perfect, far from the cookie cutter specification I found on the wiki but I am thinking they will be good enough to get started trying to make ISK by relating to my fellow players and not simply grinding NPC missions. I am about 3million Short and am due to start the Field technician skill training in 12 hours!!! Time to rush out and make 3million!
Going to officially welcome you to the EVE blogging community since i’ve only just come across your site earlier today while just reading on tweetfleet twitter. Saw some of the questions you were asking as a new player and also in need of some helpful guidance. So far you have a good blog starting out so just keep at it as well.
Anyway i’m coming up on my 2nd year in EVE quite soon and back when I started in EVE just like you are now I actually started out in the Salvage Operations business as my very first career. A bit different to how most people usually start their EVE career as compared to starting out say Mining. So you might find this link somewhat helpful and with some learning insights as well when I was getting my feet wet: http://ardentdefense.wordpress.com/2010/05/13/story-saga-of-a-eve-salvage-job-in-screenshots/
For the Salvage ship your making I’ve found that 5/3 works best on a Salvage Ship (Noctis and Destroyer both) with 5 Tractor Beams and 3 Salvager ratio. What you put in the other slots is up to you. Cargo Expanders may work better for the Destroyer since it has a smaller cargo space than say a Noctis. Since your starting out in a Destroyer for Salvaging it will be good learning experience as Salvage used to be primarily done in a Destroyer before the Noctis was introduced back in late 2010. Noctis is a much more expensive and very good Salvage Operations ship and one to eventually train towards to get eventually. However since your starting out new you’ll learn allot being in a cheaper Destroyer, it can still get the job done. Like all things EVE learning adds allot to being good at things over time and will help.
One the most important thing starting out is finding a good corp and one that fits where your interest are in EVE. Since your doing Salvaging then a Corp doing missions will help allot, most especially if members do allot of lvl 3’s and 4’s. Just being a good corp member and volunteering if possible to Salvage other corp members mission and work out some arrangement on the wreckage salvage also helps for you doing the salvaging making it worthwhile. It can really be allot of Fun while learning allot of things as well. A side benefit is you can also gain a good amount of standing being in the mission fleet of the members doing lvl 3 and 4’s that your salvaging for and build up good standing as well which can be quite helpful. In time doing it you will learn quite a bit that will help you evolve in your new career in EVE or onto other things eventually as well.
If you need help in game, just look me up as Ametius in game if need.
Hope it all helps and Fly Safe!
Thanks a lot for the encouragement Ardent. This blog is really helping me think through the game, it give me time to work and not to grind. The thing I hate about most MMO’s is the grind and repetitiveness of playing against NPC’s. Its what made me fall asleep playing WoW and DaoC. Then to make matters worse almost all new MMO’s have the whole raid thing where you have to have a full set of armour to get to the next level. Thats like punishing people for paying their subs!
The thing that attracts me to Eve is this ‘sandbox’ experience and the lack of a direction and formula for characters. Everything seems to be purely determined by your link to your character and their experiences. But this is tied to the mechanics and how the character makes ISK. Make that too easy and it loses some of its appeal, make it too hard and it will very quickly become a bit like real life.
The advice you have given me and that link are going to be really useful. Right now I have not found any corporation that interests me but I am obviously looking around. I am keen to keep Moriarity’s free spirited nature and to keep developing his integrated style. I don’t want to have to spend time grinding NPC’s and then apparently enjoying PvP – this is why I am going in this direction. I am not sure how far this style of play can be followed but we will see. The main thing is I really appreciate the advice and encouragement and I am loving the blogging community as well – I have learned literally ‘tons’ from everyone’s blog that I have read and will add yours to my list!
